Diversity, subtlety and tradition are celebrated in this exhibition of weavings by Elizabeth Buckley, Mary Rawcliffe Colton, Cindy Dworzak, Naomi Julian, Dan Klinglesmith, Cristine Posner, Eric-Paul Riege, Nick Clifford Simko, Jaye Whorton and Nancy Wohlenberg. In hand-dying yarn, weaving upside down on a French jacquard loom, or collaborating with a commercial loom, each of these local artists finds unique inspiration in their process. The textiles represent the urge to bring things together and reinvigorate the ancient human activity of weaving.

HILO is an exhibition of contemporary textile artists from across the country. Textiles have the power to draw us in: reminding us of the familiar and functional, reflecting community and surroundings. The artists play with these connotations through diverse and innovative methods of making. From weaving from hand-spun wool to constructing translucent vinyl banners and elegant bed-sized compositions, the artists draw from traditions in ways that are decidedly their own.

[Tension-Building Music] presents the recent work of Noah McLaurine, who has been exploring and photographing public lands and monuments in New Mexico since moving from Brooklyn two years ago. McLaurine’s curiosity about the natural and cultural forces that shape the unique landscape have led him to revel in the ubiquitous signs of erosion and change: the subtle marks a plant makes in the sand, enigmatic shards of metal and detritus, weather patterns hinting at atomic explosions. Wrestling with cultural artifacts surrounding Los Alamos and the Trinity Site, McLaurine notices the mountains rising in the distance, shaped by thousands of years of rain and wind, some of the only witnesses to the abrupt and radical transformation of the test site. His work highlights evidence of erosion both gradual and abrupt, how boundaries have been drawn and redrawn, and stories relentlessly written and rewritten.

Off the Record features a selection of 36 jazz record covers representative of American jazz history, with accompanying responses to the albums by local artists Lea M. Andersson, Karsten Creightney, Arden Hendrie, Karl Hofmann, Emily Howe, Hollis Moore, Reyes Padilla, Jackie Riccio, and Kacie Erin Smith. The invited artists each selected one album to use as inspiration for their own visual response. The album selection was chosen by Albuquerque’s Thomas Dodson, who has collected approximately 1,000 LPs over the last sixty years. For Thomas, “Cover art brings to mind the recordings, as documents of specific performances, which in turn allow us to recall memories, both musical and non-musical … When I listen to them, I marvel at the artistry of these musicians and I am reminded of the contexts in which they were created.” The digitized collection of album covers can be see at http://tomsvinylcollection.tumblr.com/
This exhibit coincides with the 11th Annual New Mexico Jazz Festival, which runs July 14 – 31 and features local as well as world-renowned artists and jazz masters. Following the reception of Off the Record, the Outpost will host a free screening of Charles Lloyd: Arrows Into Infinity from 4-6pm, a documentary about NEA Jazz Master, saxophonist, Charles Lloyd.

The Inpost Artspace is pleased to exhibit An Island Emerging, selected works from Kaelen Green. Her graphite drawings convey haunting, dream-like narratives, highlighting her ability to render imagined spaces with stunning precision. Through detail that reminds us of our own familiar reality, she admits us into lyrical and surreal creations, placing the viewer in emotional landscapes and among compelling figures. Based in Santa Fe, Green is currently developing an illustrated novel, a visual and narrative mythology that unfolds on an island of mysterious origin called Asphodel. The exhibition will include a number of works created for her forthcoming book.

Surface City showcases works by Albuquerque artists Tamara Zibners and Jazmyn Crosby, who represent the streets of Albuquerque and power of the surface in distinct ways. Through a transfer process, Zibners removes the photograph from its paper support, stretching and reshaping the emulsion, teasing it to a point between crumpled detritus and precious object. Crosby builds up relief prints through the tread marks of relentless automobile traffic, also asking us to question the delicacy and specificity of the image. Reflecting a curiosity about their surroundings, the artists present us with the tension between the crudeness of the images’ provenance and the resultant works of monumental, and surprising, beauty.

During September and October, the Inpost Artspace will present the work of Katelyn Bladel and Eugene Ellenberg, both MFA candidates at the University of New Mexico. Originally from Minnesota, Bladel’s current work leads her to rural, abandoned homes in search of fragments of what once was. Across county lines and after days spent on the road, her documentation and experience of these spaces are recontextualized through various media to create a narrative and instill value in these homes once again. Ellenberg, a native to South Carolina, uses image-based media to explore obstacles of intimacy as experienced throughout the human condition. His own fears, failure and wonder inform a creative inquiry into private and communal spaces to unveil vulnerabilities, address hesitations and encourage curiosities. The universal themes examined by both artists serve as quiet reminders of places we cannot return to, experiences imagined and yearnings unfulfilled.

Jonathan Baldwin is renowned in Albuquerque for his work as a musician and Radio personality. A cornet player who played with bassist, Zimbabwe N’Kenya, J.A. Deane’s improvisational ensemble, Out of Context and others, he also has been a longtime DJ for KUNM’s All That Jazz (Fridays). What a lot of people do not know is that for more than 50 years Jon Baldwin has pursued another passion as well – painting. Born in Mt Kisco, New York, he attended the Mannes School of Music, but it was the New York City art and music scene where he says he got his “real education.” It was the 60’s… Ornette Coleman was playing at The 5 Spot Café (and turning the New York jazz scene on its ear), and artists like Jasper Johns, Robert Rauchenberg and Frank Stella were changing the mainstream of painting. Inspired to create his own collages and paintings, he met up with the “Park Place” artists through various Free Jazz sessions and began showing his work (at the Park Place Gallery, at M.I.T., and in Denver, Colorado). Over the years, and after a series of relocations (Colorado, San Francisco, Taos), Baldwin’s paintings have changed and shifted, depending on his inspirations and locales. When he settled in Albuquerque in the late 70’s, he was painting ‘specific’ landscapes inspired by his own surroundings and by the eastern Long Island painters, Fairfield Porter and Jane Frielicher. Later, he moved to more abstract geometric paintings inspired by Picasso’s “weeping women” series and Richard Diebenkorn’s “Ocean Park” series. In his artist statement, Baldwin writes, “I like the dichotomy that exists between the painting as an object and the integrity thereof and the transcendental quality of color and line creating light and visual pleasure.” This exhibit is a retrospective which brings the scope of Baldwin’s work to the eyes of many who have never seen it before.
