OFF THE RECORD: Artwork inspired by the jazz vinyl collection of Tom Dodson

by | Jul 27, 2016 | Inpost Artspace

Opening Reception: Sunday, July 17, 2 – 4 pm

Off the Record features a selection of 36 jazz record covers representative of American jazz history, with accompanying responses to the albums by local artists Lea M. Andersson, Karsten Creightney, Arden Hendrie, Karl Hofmann, Emily Howe, Hollis Moore, Reyes Padilla, Jackie Riccio, and Kacie Erin Smith. The invited artists each selected one album to use as inspiration for their own visual response. The album selection was chosen by Albuquerque’s Thomas Dodson, who has collected approximately 1,000 LPs over the last sixty years. For Thomas, “Cover art brings to mind the recordings, as documents of specific performances, which in turn allow us to recall memories, both musical and non-musical … When I listen to them, I marvel at the artistry of these musicians and I am reminded of the contexts in which they were created.” The digitized collection of album covers can be see at http://tomsvinylcollection.tumblr.com/

This exhibit coincides with the 11th Annual New Mexico Jazz Festival, which runs July 14 – 31 and features local as well as world-renowned artists and jazz masters. Following the reception of Off the Record, the Outpost will host a free screening of Charles Lloyd: Arrows Into Infinity from 4-6pm, a documentary about NEA Jazz Master, saxophonist, Charles Lloyd.

Exhibition Dates: June 27 – August 28, 2016
