Jazz & Latin Music Classes for Youth & Adults
Outpost classes are taught by the Outpost team comprising saxophonist Kanoa Kaluhiwa; bassist Rodney Bowe; and percussionist/trombonist, César Bauvallet and take place at the Outpost Performance Space. All classes cover music theory, ear training, solo development, song forms and various rhythm section approaches and aim to build positive attitudes, trust, teamwork cooperation, confidence, compassion and a sense of humor—skills and values that will serve participants well beyond the workshop and throughout their entire educations and lives.
Also part of the Outpost Education curriculum are the long-running Adult Education jazz classes offered by the New Mexico Jazz Workshop (now merged with Outpost). These classes, which take place at the Jazz Workshop building at 5500 Lomas NE are designed for adults of all ages and skill levels and offer participants a chance to revisit their passion for music in a supportive setting, with classes ranging from Big Band to Jazz Improvisation to voice studies and beyond! Students ages 15 + are also welcome in these classes, but must be proficient on their instruments and with reading music. The NMJW team is guitarist Michael Anthony; vocalists Patty Stephens and Zenobia Conkerite; trumpeter/band director Henry Estrada; and bassist Micky Patten.
The NMJW also offers the Empowerment Through Music program, coordinated by bassist Artha Meadors. Founded in 2009, the program is designed to expand access to arts education and features the after-school and summer South Valley Band Project as well as the Digital Technology Project. A “music and mentoring” program, it fosters higher school engagement and plants the seeds for lifelong enjoyment of the arts. Professional musicians share their craft with young people in a supportive environment and help them acquire the “superpower of music.”
TO ENROLL FOR CLASSES: AGES: MINIMUM AGE 10 UP TO (AND INCLUDING) HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR. CLASS LIMIT: 12 (MINIMUM OF 5 IS REQUIRED). WE ASK THAT STUDENTS (YOUTH & ADULT) SHOW UP A FEW MINUTES EARLY ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE CLASS THEY WOULD LIKE TO ATTEND. THAT SAID, IN ORDER TO MAKE THIS THE BEST EXPERIENCE FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS, WE MAY HAVE TO ASSIGN STUDENTS TO A DIFFERENT CLASS BASED ON THEIR AGE, SKILL LEVEL AND SCHEDULES.
