Founded by drummer Cal Haines, SuperSax New Mexico performs the original compositions of the legendary Los Angeles group Supersax, which was launched in the 1970s. Created by saxophonist Med Flory and bassist Buddy Clark, the stunning music features 5 saxophones playing orchestrated transcriptions of Charlie Parker solos. Renowned trumpeter Bobby Shew, who was present at many Supersax L.A. performances, joins some of New Mexico’s finest musicians. It's Alex Murzyn and Scott Jacobsen, alto saxes; Aaron Lovato and Lee Taylor, tenor saxes; Glenn Kostur, baritone sax; Robert Lah, piano; Colin Deuble, bass; and Cal Haines, drums. Nominated for three Grammy awards, Bobby Shew performed with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, as well was with Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson, Si Zentner and Benny Goodman after which he spent seven years in Las Vegas playing with top show bands in casinos and touring and/or playing with Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, Robert Goulet, Steve Allen, Paul Anka, Connie Stevens, and Tom Jones. In1972, he moved to Los Angeles where he became a first-call studio musician and continued to play in the big bands of Bill Holman, Bob Florence, Louie Bellson, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and others. In addition, he played and recorded with Bud Shank, Horace Silver, Art Pepper, Carl Fontana, and his own highly regarded quintet and sextet. He returned to his hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico several years ago and has served as the director of the Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra as well as being active as a performer and educator here and throughout the world.
