Outpost is pleased to host another birthday celebration concert for one of New Mexico’s true jazz luminaries—multi-woodwind maestro, Arlen Asher, who turns 91 today. Joined by his longtime bandmates in the group, Straight Up, which tonight features Christine Fawson, trumpet; Bob Fox, piano; Terry Burns, bass; and John Trentacosta, drums, Asher shares this special evening with 90 years-young multi-woodwind player and percussionist Souren Baronian and his Middle Eastern Jazz ensemble, Taksim. Arlen Asher, who moved to Albuquerque in 1958, established a private woodwind studio in 1965, teaching woodwind fundamentals and jazz improvisation for many years. In 1994, he joined drummer John Trentacosta’s group, Straight Up and he has appeared on numerous CDs, including his own 2002 release, Another Spring, Straight Up’s Live Jazz in the Desert and his 2018 release, Lovesome Jazz Woodwinds where he’s featured on alto flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, and soprano and baritone saxophones. Asher remains active as a performer as well as hosting, along with John Trentacosta, “The Jazz Experience” on Santa Fe Public Radio station, KSFR on Monday mornings. Taksim, which means ‘improvisation’ in the Middle East, fuses traditional instrumentation with Middle Eastern rhythms, a jazz vocabulary, and bebop sensibilities. Featuring clarinet, bass, sax, the duduk, riq, and dombek the group was created by Souren Baronian and is a hybrid of his ethnic Armenian heritage (born in Spanish Harlem in 1930) and the jazz idioms of his New York upbringing. Baronian studied for many years with Warne Marsh and Lennie Tristano, and has played and studied with the greats of the Middle-Eastern music world.
Arlen Asher and Straight Up will also perform for the Santa Fe Music Collective on Friday, May 8 at SITE Santa Fe. Info at www.santafemusiccollective.org
