Pianist, composer, bandleader and educator Myra Melford – whom the New Yorker called “a stalwart of the new-jazz movement”– has spent the last three decades making brilliant original music that is both challenging and engaging, seamlessly melding composition and improvisation along with divergent idioms and musical eras—from jazz, blues and global folk styles to the classical traditions and the avant-garde as well as poetry, Indian meditation, and yoga. Her most recent release, The Other Side of Air (Firehouse 12), by her Snowy Egret quintet, which features four of the most compelling musicians currently at work in jazz and the avant-garde – cornetist Ron Miles; guitarist Liberty Ellman; bass guitarist Stomu Takeishi; and drummer Rudy Royston – is “an extraordinary document of her unique creative language—a seamless, shifting blend of composition and improvisation, and a probing of the space shared between dynamic small-group jazz and contemporary chamber music.” Since debuting on record as a bandleader in 1990, Melford has built a discography of more than 20 albums as a leader or co-leader, and has collaborated with luminaries including Dave Douglas, Erik Friedlander, Ben Goldberg, Leroy Jenkins, Cuong Vu, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
