Recruited by Sonny Rollins and Diane Reeves for “his singular tone, refined listening skills, limitless chops and efflorescent imagination,” jazz guitarist Russell Malone has become one of the signature players of his generation. With his swinging, straight-ahead style, weaving elements of blues, gospel, and R&B, he is known on the international circuit for his world-class quartet and trio and is also a long-standing member of Ron Carter’s Golden Striker Trio. Early in his career, he joined organist Jimmy Smith’s band and soon became a member of Harry Connick Jr.’s big band, appearing on Connick’s 1991 album, Blue Light, Red Light. Malone worked throughout much of the '90s and early 2000s with Diana Krall, appearing on her recordings as well performing with Roy Hargrove’s Latin Grammy winning Crisol band. He has also appeared with Dianne Reeves (NM Jazz Festival 2007) and on albums of Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride and Ron Carter. Fellow guitarist, Kurt Rosenwinkel called Malone” an absolute master, the best of the best,” citing his “fluid touch and beautiful integration between moving lines and harmonic cadences, all with a completely relaxed quality.” His quartet tonight features Rick Germanson, piano; Luke Sellick, bass; and Neal Smith, drums.
Russell Malone will also offer a guitar clinic on Wednesday, March 25 at 7pm (location TBA). $20 donation requested
