Educational ProgramsJazz & Latin Music Classes

All classes are taught by the Outpost team comprising saxophonist, Kanoa Kaluhiwa; drummer, Sharon Eldridge; pianist, Jim Ahrend; and trombonist/percussionist, César Bauvallet. We aim to build positive attitudes, trust, teamwork, cooperation, confidence, compassion, and a sense of humor—everything you could ever want from music. Both Youth and Adults will perform a recital for family and friends at the end of their second session. It is expected that students will have their own instruments to bring to class. Outpost will provide a piano, a drumset, and guitar & bass amplifiers.

TO ENROLL FOR CLASSES: AGES: MINIMUM AGE 10 UP TO (AND INCLUDING) HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR. CLASS LIMIT: 12 (MINIMUM OF 5 IS REQUIRED). WE ASK THAT STUDENTS (YOUTH & ADULT) SHOW UP A FEW MINUTES EARLY ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE CLASS THEY WOULD LIKE TO ATTEND. THAT SAID, IN ORDER TO MAKE THIS THE BEST EXPERIENCE FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS, WE MAY HAVE TO ASSIGN STUDENTS TO A DIFFERENT CLASS BASED ON THEIR AGE, SKILL LEVEL AND SCHEDULES. CALL US AT 268-0044 FOR MORE INFORMATION.

MORE CLASS OFFERINGS AT OUTPOST

In addition to Jazz Ensemble Classes, Outpost offers other class opportunities  for the youth of the community.

Youth Opera Program

Outpost now offers the Youth Opera Program- co-taught by John Bartlit (music) and Kristen Loree (theatre). Originally a program of the Santa Fe Opera outreach program, it has been under the auspices of the Outpost Performance Space since 2009. In the Spring of 2016 we moved it from weekday mornings  to Saturday mornings in order to include more participants. In eight weeks, 4-14 year olds will create, rehearse and perform a short original opera at the Kids Variety Show. Learn collaboration, story telling, composition, acting, choreography and much more! Every participant is responsible for: brainstorming in a group setting, making choices for the good of the story, a costume for their character, making up melodies, learning harmonies and lyrics, executing clear staging with volume and articulation.
