Thursday, May 20, 7:30pm John Trentacosta & Straight Upfeaturing Arlen Asher & Bobby Shew
A native New Yorker, drummer John Trentacosta moved to New Mexico in 1992. In 1994, he formed Straight Up which made its debut at the old Outpost Performance Space and featured Bob Fox, piano; and David Parlato, bass. Since that time the group has changed personnel slightly, expanding and contracting to suit the occasion. Over the years, the Straight Up rhythm section has provided accompaniment for numerous headliners including James Moody, Bud Shank, Lee Konitz and Eddie Daniels; every Friday, from 2003-2009 they were the house band at Bumble Bee’s Baja Grill in Santa Fe where they backed up the great Kenny Davern, Doug Lawrence, Kevin Hays, Bobby Shew, Hillary Smith, and Giacomo Gates; and the group has appeared in festivals from the New Mexico Jazz Festival to Sedona Jazz on the Rocks. In 1997, Straight Up recorded their first award-winning CD, Live Jazz In The Desert featuring trumpeter, Michael Morreale, and New Mexico jazz woodwind legend, Arlen Asher, followed by No Need For Words. Along with Arlen Asher, tonight’s concert will feature the renowned Grammy award winning trumpeter Bobby Shew, who presently makes his home in Albuquerque where he grew up. Along with Trentacosta and Arlen Asher, Straight Up currently comprises Michael Olivola, bass; and Brian Bennet, piano. $20/$15 Members & Students. |
