Recently relocated to New Mexico from NYC, guitarist, composer Ila Cantor presents her first performance as a leader at The Outpost Performance Space. Born in Boston in 1984, she later moved to NYC where her mentors included John Scofield, John Abercrombie and Ben Monder. At 20, after attending The New School, she moved to Spain where she toured frequently with her own band and studied with Argentinean composer, Guillermo Klein. In 2006, she recorded her first album, Mother Nebula for the acclaimed Spanish label, Fresh Sound Records, subsequently returning to New York. She has played with Reid Anderson, Ben Street, Steve Cardenas, Gerald Cleaver, Rudy Royston, and Les Paul among others. She writes and records prolifically and in 2009, received the prestigious Van Lier Fellowship Award, honoring young composers from New York City. She’ll be accompanied in this concert by frequent collaborator, bassist Matt Brewer and drummer Tommy Crane. Brewer, who grew up in New Mexico and recently moved back played with Cantor last year at The Outpost Performance Space as part of the 4th Annual New Mexico Jazz Festival. He has played and toured worldwide with Greg Osby, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Lee Konitz, Terence Blanchard, Jeff “Tain” Watts, and Aaron Parks as well as his own groups. Drummer, Tommy Crane has toured internationally and throughout the United States with the Mingus Big Band, Jeremy Pelt, The Greg Osby Five, David Binney and others. He attended The New School in New York and has played with his friend Matt Brewer for several years. He currently appears regularly with Logan Richardson’s Shift, Greg Ruggiero’s quartet, Pete Robbin’s Centric and his own ensemble, Be An Astronaut.
