Sunday, April 25, 3pm Fred Sturm
Pianist Fred Sturm presents the third in an ongoing series of concerts featuring music by Latin American composers. Like the fall concert performed by Ana Cervantes, Sturm will focus on music of Mexican composers –appropriate in this centennial/bicentennial year commemorating the Mexican Revolution and Declaration of Independence. This concert will include a broad sampling of pieces from the past sixty-five years. Prominently featured will be works by two composers: Federico Ibarra and Rodolfo Halffter. Sturm will perform three of the six sonatas Ibarra has written to date, including the United States premier of his sixth sonata, written in 2002. Halffter, who was born in Spain but spent most of his life in exile in Mexico after the Spanish civil war, wrote in a style that has neo-classical and neo-baroque elements. Also featured on the program are the works of Blas Galindo, Juan Pablo Moncaya, Ernesto Hernandez Moncada, and Arturo Marquez. Fred Sturm is a UNM alumnus, having received his master of music in piano performance from UNM in 1979, studying under the late Morton Schoenfeld. Since that time, he has concentrated on the piano music of Latin America, specializing in the work of Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos in particular. This concert marks the release of his fifth CD, Sonidos de Nueva España, which includes most of the works to be performed. $15/$10 Members & Students. |
