Omar Sosa’s Afreecanos

Sponsored by nomades: at home in the world

omar

Composer, arranger, producer, pianist, percussionist, and bandleader, Omar Sosa was born and raised in Camaguey, Cuba. His music entwines the cultural traditions of Africa, Europe, and the Americas in a unique, cosmopolitan voice. Drawing from hip-hop, jazz, Afro-Ecuadorian choir music, Cuban rhythms and the hypnotic trance music of Gnawa ritual, Sosa adds his own experimental touches, to create a fresh, original urban sound. Sosa has been honored with a Smithsonian Associates’ Lifetime Achievement award, is a three-time Grammy nominee, and was nominated twice for both the BBC World Music awards and the Jazz Journalists Association awards. AllAboutJazz writes about his 2008 release, Afreecanos, “Sosa finds natural intersections between the musical traditions, refraining from forced references and relying upon each tradition to link back to African roots. Sosa tells a powerful story about the growth from roots to branches and the fluid connection that eternally exists between them.”  Afreecanos is Mola Sylla, vocals, m’bira, xalam, kongoman; Childo Tomas, electric bass, kalimba, vocals; and Marque Gilmore, drums, vocals.
