The winner of the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition in 2004, Gretchen Parlato attended the L.A. County High School for the Arts, graduated from UCLA with a BA in Ethnomusicology/Jazz Studies, and then went on to attend the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance as its first vocalist. Moving to NYC, in 2005 she released her self-titled debut album, and toured internationally with her own band and as a guest of artists including mentors Wayne Shorter, and Herbie Hancock as well as Oscar Castro-Neves, Gal Costa, Ivan Lins and Dianne Reeves. She has recorded with Terence Blanchard, Kenny Barron, Lionel Loueke, and Esperanza Spalding and was recently featured in the Documentary Channel’s “Icons Among Us: Jazz in the Present Tense,” and “Rising Stars” on Japan’s NHK-TV. Ben Ratliff of the New York Times proclaimed her “an extraordinary singer.” Her recent release, In a Dream, was deemed Best Vocal Jazz Album of 2009 by the Village Voice and Jazz Times’ Critics Picks for top 50 new albums of 2009. Jazz Times called Parlato “ A musician’s singer for a new generation.” Accompanying Gretchen Parlato are Alan Hampton, bass; Kendrick Scott, drums; and pianist Julian Shore.
