The Southwest Jazz Orchestra

Founded by Jack Manno in the fall of 2004, the Southwest Jazz Orchestra is a mid-size ensemble featuring mixed woodwinds and a sound that is more than a combo but less than a traditional big band offering local composers and band members an opportunity to create original works and new arrangements of jazz standards. Over the past six years, SJO has appeared at Outpost and the NMJW’s Jazz Under the Stars Museum Series, as well as at the College of Santa Fe, at St. John’s College, and in Los Alamos. Jack Manno, is a former studio singer from New York, as well as a pianist, arranger and composer whose credits include work with Judy Garland, Harry Belafonte, Leonard Bernstein, Perry Como, and Duke Pearson. Tonight’s program, featuring the music of Charles Mingus, will add 4 luminaries (Arlen Asher, reeds; Paul Gonzales, trumpet; Mark Weaver, tuba; Stephanie Fauber, French horn) to the standing group of 10 which comprises Aaron Lewis, Kurt Carr, J.R. Williams, Bill Wood, reeds; Jan McDonald & Christian Pincock, brass; plus David Kelly, guitar; Dave Brady, vibes; Richard Snider, bass; and Rick Compton, drums.
